Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 review 2014

The Android 4.4 KitKat update is slowly rolling out to more devices and Samsung smartphone owners are keenly waiting for it to reach their handsets. Recently we’ve shown readers previews of Android 4.4 on the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 and now it’s time to show a Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. Note 3 Android 4.4 speed test.

The Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 update recently arrived with some fortunate owners of the device but it could take quite a while for it to roll out to every region and carrier worldwide. A leaked build of the Android 4.4 update was also recently made available for the Galaxy S4, but most owners will choose to wait for this update to start being officially pushed out.

Some people have opted to install the leaked builds of Android 4.4 KitKat though, and recently we showed previews, benchmarks and Internet speeds of 4.4 on the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4. You can see those articles here and here respectively if you choose.

The next logical step was to compare the start up speed of both of these smartphones running Android 4.4 KitKat. The YouTube video that we have embedded below this article shows exactly that.

First it’s pointed out that the Galaxy Note 3 used in this test is using a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor while the Galaxy S4 is using a 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU. Both are running the latest 4.4 firmware.

The first thing that the video shows is that both devices are now quicker to unlock than with previous firmware. Then the reviewer goes into Settings to show that both are definitely running Android 4.4.2.

You’ll then see both handsets being restarted and it’s the Note 3 that powers up faster than the Galaxy S4, although to be honest the difference is not too significant. There’s also a look at a new feature with the Samsung Music app, which is shown on the Galaxy Note 3.

When you’ve checked out the video below we’d be interested to hear from you about the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3. Are you eagerly waiting for this update to arrive for your handset?

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Older women shine at Oscar nominations

  • Films highlighting diversity were mostly overlooked

  • Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey are on outside looking in

(CNN) -- The nominations for the Academy Awards were presented Thursday morning, and as always there were trends and surprises. Here are a few things we learned:

1. Make way for older women.

It's not for nothing that one of best jokes from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes referred to the lack of meaty roles for actresses of a certain age: "Meryl Streep (is) so brilliant in 'August: Osage County,' proving that there are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over 60," said Fey. And yes, Streep was nominated for an Oscar (for best actress) as well.

But also nominated were Judi Dench, 79, and perhaps more surprisingly, June Squibb, 84. Squibb is a longtime character actress -- you may remember her as Elderly Woman in "Far From Heaven" or Mrs. Cone in an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" -- who got a chance to shine as Bruce Dern's exasperated yet caring wife in "Nebraska." In fact, of the 10 actresses nominated for either best actress or best supporting actress, six are over 40 and two others -- Amy Adams and Sally Hawkins -- are in their late 30s.

2. Diversity, but no diversity.

This year featured a number of notable movies starring or directed by people of color, including "Lee Daniels' The Butler," "Fruitvale Station," "42," "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" and "12 Years a Slave." But of that group, only "12 Years" got any support from the Oscars, with nine nominations. "Mandela" picked up a nod for a U2 song; "Fruitvale" -- despite showcasing rising talents Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler -- got nothing. And despite a INR 6,155.04 ($100) million box office -- and raves for performers Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey -- "The Butler" also came up with zero. During the Globes show, there was a Twitter hashtag protesting the lack of diversity: #notbuyingit. You'll probably see it again on Oscar night.

2014 awards season: Does diversity matter more than wins?

3. Where's Tom Hanks? What about Oprah?

Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved film stars in Hollywood. He's a successful producer and two-time Oscar winner. After a sluggish few years, marked by "Cloud Atlas," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "Larry Crowne," he was back in the good graces at the box office and with critics, thanks to "Captain Phillips" and "Saving Mr. Banks." The result? No Oscar nominations. Maybe he split the vote; maybe voters just weren't that impressed. (They certainly weren't by "Mr. Banks.")

As for Winfrey -- also a successful producer and personality -- the theory is that "The Butler's" summer release hurt its chances. But it was still a surprise that her name wasn't listed for either the Oscars or the Golden Globes. Better luck at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Oprah.

Amy Adams: 'I'm at a loss for words'

4. There are no sure things.

The handicappers were wrong about a lot. Take a gander:
• Snubbed: Robert Redford, "All Is Lost." An almost wordless solo performance goes for naught at the Oscars. "Lost," indeed.
• Snubbed: The Coen brothers, "Inside Llewyn Davis." Despite their offbeat production, Ethan and Joel have become Oscar favorites -- even if it's just a scriptwriting nod. Not this year. Llewyn Davis will have to keep walking the streets (probably with a waterlogged shoe).
• Snubbed: Emma Thompson, "Saving Mr. Banks." So much for "Banks" despite its Disney pedigree.
• Snubbed: James Gandolfini, "Enough Said." The academy thought "Enough" was apparently too much, since neither Julia Louis-Dreyfus nor Nicole Holofcener's script were picked, either.
• Surprise!: Sally Hawkins, "Blue Jasmine." The academy loves Woody Allen screenplays (he got nominated, too), and Hawkins wasn't overlooked.
• Surprise!: "Philomena." A small, character-driven movie about a woman searching for her son? Best picture, best actress (Dench) and best adapted screenplay nominations are the prizes.

Special coverage: All things awards season

5. Love for "Dallas Buyers Club."

Perhaps "Hustle," "12 Years" and "Gravity" will duke it out for best picture. But remember "no sure things," because when it came to audience response at the nominations, "Dallas Buyers Club" was the clear winner, greeted with cheers for every nomination. It has an Oscar-friendly subject -- a heroic battle against AIDS -- and strong performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. It received a surprising six nominations.

The Academy Awards are March 2.

"She had undergone treatment in France recently and after check-ups it was found that she had some serious health issues and he was a worried man. I pacified him after hearing it," said Sreenivasan.

Reports said the couple had visited a leading private hospital here recently and certain tests were conducted on Pushkar.

Sources told a news agency that she was identified with suspected systemic lupus erythematosus (connective tissue disorder) and this is a disease which has no definite treatment.

She had also undergone colonoscopy

Russell Brand has confessed that his relationship with Jemima Khan is nothing like he has ever experienced.

The 38-year-old comedian, who split from Katy Perry in December 2011 after just 14 months of marriage, said that his relationship with the magazine editor is “very different” from anything he has ever experienced and he couldn’t be happier, Contactmusic reported.

Appearing with Jemima’s dog on an episode of ‘The Jonathan Ross’ show, he was asked what would happen to the pooch if they split, prompting him to reply: ‘‘Don’t say that mate, I really love her. That would hurt my little heart.”

American SAG awards 2014

Peter Bowes looks at the night's big winners

The cast of 1970s crime caper American Hustle have taken the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Representing his co-stars, Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams and Christian Bale, actor Bradley Cooper praised film director David O Russell.

"He is an actor's director," he said. "That notion is tossed around. He is the embodiment of it."

As actors form the biggest voting bloc in the Oscars, the SAG awards are seen as a key indicator for that ceremony.

Last year, the guild chose hostage drama Argo for its top honour, with that film going on to receive the Academy Award for best picture.

However, this year's field is more competitive - with 12 Years a Slave and Gravity expected to give American Hustle's A-list cast a run for their money when the Oscars roll around on 2 March.
Lupita Nyong'oLupita Nyong'o has also received Bafta and Oscar nominations for her film debut

Newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, who plays an abused plantation worker in 12 Years a Slave, was given the best supporting actress award by SAG voters.

I love this little guy. He's so sexy, isn't he? Sort of naked but not quite...”

Dame Helen Mirren on her trophy

The Kenyan actress also thanked her director, British film-maker Steve McQueen, "for taking a flashlight and shining it underneath the floorboards of this nation and reminding us what it is we stand on".

She also recounted the story of phoning her father to tell him she had got the part.

"'Daddy, do you know who Brad Pitt is? I'm going to be in a movie with him!"' she recalled.

"And he said, 'I don't know him personally but I'm glad you got a job.'"

Both best actor and best supporting actor went to the stars of Dallas Buyers Club, a small film that cost just INR 246.2 ()m (INR 242.88 ()m) to make.

It is based on the true story of a homophobic Texan who gets Aids and smuggles unapproved anti-HIV drugs into the US in the 1980s.

Matthew McConaughey, in the lead role, and Jared Leto, as a transgender woman with Aids, both endured dramatic weight loss to play their parts.

McConaughey said of his SAG honour: "It really shines a great light on this bull ride we call acting.

"I've been able to recently find some characters that I can humble myself to their humanities and get feverishly drunk on their obsessions."

Warming to his theme, the 44-year-old started musing on the "magic place" that actors reach when "you're seeing the character from the inside out".

"That doesn't always happen but, boy, when it does, it feels like they can put a blindfold on you and put you in a spaceship and take you to Neptune," he added.

Cate Blanchett took home the best actress prize for her complex, cracked portrayal of a socialite fallen on hard times in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

It was her 17th best actress prize of the awards season - and she is considered a near-certainty for the trophy at both the Baftas and Oscars.

But when her acceptance speech was cut short, the actress protested: "29 seconds? Matthew McConaughey spoke about Neptune!''

The SAG Awards also recognise actors working in TV, with sitcom Modern Family winning best ensemble in a comedy series and best male actor in a comedy series for Ty Burrell's dumb-but-loveable patriarch Phil Dunphy.

I swear to you I would kill you all over again”

Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston to his co-stars

In his speech, Burrell outlined his steps for becoming a successful actor, which included: "Be born into a family that never had an actor in it; Use that false sense of confidence to woo and attract a spouse who's better than you; Have no skill other than being a needy extrovert; Use that lack of skill to stumble into a job."

Accepting the show's cast award - its fourth in a row - Colombian star Sofia Vergara said the honour was "mind-blowing", adding: "I can barely speak English."

Breaking Bad, which left TV screens last year, continued its victory lap around the awards shows, winning outstanding dramatic cast and for best lead actor Bryan Cranston, for his indelible performance as teacher-turned-meth dealer, Walter White.

Looking out at his former cast-mates, Cranston remarked: "We have the nicest bunch of white supremacist Nazis I have ever worked with.

"I swear to you I would kill you all over again."

British Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Helen Mirren won best actress awards for Downton Abbey and the TV movie Phil Spector respectively.

Dame Maggie was not present to accept her award, whereas Dame Helen lingered on stage, examining the trophy she'd just received.

"I love this little guy," she said. "He's so sexy, isn't he? Sort of naked but not quite..."

Michael Douglas picked up a best actor prize in the TV category for his performance as Liberace in the movie Behind The Candelabra, which was only shown on cable channel HBO in the States.

The lifetime achievement award was given to Rita Moreno, the 81-year-old actress who played Anita del Carmen in West Side Story, alongside roles in Singin' in the Rain and The King and I, and on Broadway in The Ritz and The Odd Couple.

Introduced by Morgan Freeman, the Puerto Rican star danced her way up to the podium and, upon receiving a standing ovation, let out an unscripted expletive.

"I am sorry about that word.... Actually, I am not," she said.

The star thanked the guild for honouring her "early in the third act of my life" before serenading the audience with a few lines from This Is All I Ask

Nokia Normandy's latest leaked image shows multiple colours

Nokia Normandy

The so-called Nokia Android smartphone, Normandy, will come in a range of colours. The latest leaked images suggest so. The device, rumoured to run on the Google-owned Android OS, is also said to be a low-cost handset.

@evleaks has posted an image of the rumoured device on Twitter that suggests its range of colours. Before this, a couple of other leaks had revealed the prototype of the device. Every week we see some leaked info about Normandy on several reputed websites.

On the specifications front, the Nokia Normandy is said to sport a 4-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 5-megapixel rear camera. It will come with Android 4.4.1 KitKat.

Despite discussions getting hotter about Nokia's android phone on internet, there is no official confirmation or denial in this regard. With the series of leaks and speculations, we can safely assume that Nokia Normandy, the first Android phone from the Finnish handset maker, is in the works currently.

Apple issues firmware update for latest Mac Pro

Apple has reportedly issued an EFI firmware update for the recently launched Mac Pro, fixing some hardware bugs that were identified since its release.

The latest Mac Pro hit the stores on Thursday and the tech giant found some initial hardware bugs and the update aims to improve the system’s reliability during boot.

According to Cnet, the EFI firmware update addresses a problem with the built-in memory self-test that occurs on startup and also improves graphics power handling when using Windows in Boot Camp.

The latest Mac Pro has a radical design which is in contrast with the old aluminum chassis for a rounded and minute form that relies on Thunderbolt connectivity for expansion rather than internal PCI-express slots.

The report said that the update has been made available through Software Update for Mac Pro systems, and new users would be able to see the patch immediately available to install.

Users can also download and run the patch manually from Apple's support page, the report added.

Latest Nokia Normandy leak gives Android a colourful new look

Those Nokia Normandy rumours are gathering some serious momentum right now, but we're still not entirely convinced that the Android Nokia phone is a sure thing.

We were a little suspect of a picture tweeted by someone who claimed we were looking at the Normandy, especially as the phone was hidden behind a protective shell.

However another picture of the handset, this time without the case, has just popped up over on Weibo – and it's a tad more persuasive.

The phone shows a vibrant OS on the screen that looks like it could be Nokia's modified version of Android 4.4 KitKat, which has also been rumoured for the device.

These icons weren't seen in the recent leak of screens by @evleaks, which showed lockscreen notifications, Skype and calling in action.

Normandy landing?

Nokia NormandyWe put it side by side with pure Android and several of the icons along the top do match up, though that still doesn't mean this is the real deal.

The big menu icons on the display do, however, look quite different to the standard Android ones. So Nokia may have done a real job on this.

But with Microsoft purchasing Nokia's handset division, a Normandy handset still feels unlikely, despite it showing up in a benchmark test with a 5-megapixel camera and 854 x 540 display.

But then we've heard that Nokia has been developing the phone despite the sale and plans to push it out in 2014.

These latest pictures could be an indication that the wheels on the Normandy are very much in motion.
